DEPRESSION is a state of low mood and aversion to activity or apathy that can affect a person’s thought, behaviour, feelings and sense of well-being. Depression is one the serious problem common in our society.
“People think depression is crying or sadness or dressing in black. But people are wrong. Depression is constant feeling of being numb, being numb to the emotions and being numb to lie. You wake up in the morning just to go back in bed again. Days aren’t really days; they are just annoying obstacles that need to be faced. It is a desire for anything that can help you make it from one day to another.”
Depression is caused by mental abuse, physical abuse, neglection, sexual abuse, unequal parental treatment of sibling can contribute to depression in adult hood. Past physical, sexual or emotional abuse can increase the vulnerability of depression later in life or the person who has biological vulnerability to develop depression may result from personal conflict or disputes with family or friends.
Sadness or grief from the death or loss of loved one though natural may increase the risk of depression. Losses that may lead to grief include death, loss of job or beloved one or any changes such as divorce or retirement. Depression can also be genetic. Problem such as isolation due to others, mental illness or cast out of a family or social group can develop depression.
Some of the symptoms of depression are:
- Feeling of helplessness and hopelessness.
- Loss of interest in daily activities.
- Appetite or weight change- significant weight loss or a change of more than 5% of body weight in a month.
- Sleep changes- either insomnia
- Anger or irritability- feeling agitated, restless, violent.
- Loss of energy
- Self loathing- strong feeling of worthlessness or guilt.
- Reckless behaviour and concentration level.
Different people have different symptoms if they are under depression such as : In Men are less likely to acknowledge feeling of self loathing or guilt or hopelessness. Instead, they tend to complain about fatigue, irritability, sleeping problem and loss of interest in work and hobbies. They’re also much more likely to experience symptoms such as anger, aggression, reckless behaviour and substance abuse. Whereas Depression in woman is impacted by feelings of guilt, excessive sleeping, overeating, weight gain, hormonal factors during menstruation, pregnancy and menopause. Up to 1 in 7 woman experience depression during childbirth. Depression in teens which are nowadays most common have symptoms such as Irritability, anger and agitation . They complain of headaches, stomachaches or other physical pain.
BUT WHAT IS THE ROLE OF CSR HERE? Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a business approach that contributes to sustainable development by delivering economic, social and environmental benefits for all stakeholders.
As also being socially responsible, CSR play a very big role in healthcare, and also through their reforms have opened many small hospitals. Depression which is todays world is becoming a trend, if not done anything can lead to serious issues like:
- Suicide
- Addiction (most people when in depression get addicted to drugs and alcohol)
- Self injury
- Poor performance at work place
- Relationship problems (divorce)
CSR can help fight this problem by making people aware about its seriousness and creating workshops in school, colleges or in the work place. By sharing your heart out can also solve the problem of depression.
DEPRESSION is a serious matter and we need to realise this as early as we can; hundreds of people die because of depression. If you know anybody or you are a victim of this then try to get help and do not hold in forever or else you’ll be facing the same thing.
